Memoriam Chatelin

I met Francoise in 2012 and I will always remember our first discussion when she explained to me all the reasons not to work with her. Despite all her benevolent warnings for choosing a complex and unpopular field of research, which by the challenges I went through were proven right, in addition of choosing her singular personality as my thesis director, I never regretted this scientific, professional and human experience that has changed my life.

Our mathematical discussions were often vigorous and passionated due to our both characters, but always reunited with our common quest of knowledge and wisdom. The uncountable hours spent talking about mathematics, epistemology, history and philosophy contributed to forge my vision of Computation.

I am deeply proud and grateful for the gift of her rigorous and benevolent transmission.

In memory of Françoise Chatelin

I am honored to have been the first PhD student of Françoise Chatelin in Paris. She was extremely passionate about mathematics and had the ability of transmitting her passion.

She made my thesis period one of the most important of my life. First, by this passion for mathematics that inhabited her. Even her negative reviews were invaluable and inspirational to me. She worked extensively on applied mathematics and more particularly on spectral theory, qualitative computing, chaos theory, and closer to the world of intensive computing on numerical linear algebra. The latter would constitute the backbone of my research thereafter.

When starting my thesis, she proposed me to do researches on the adaptation of the Padé-Raleigh-Ritz method to discrete space. After several months of working on this subject she offered me the opportunity to work at Control Data Corporation (CDC) and continue my research on the eigenvalue problem using Cyber 205 (the most powerful supercomputer in the world of that time). She transmitted to me her passion on the theoretical and practical aspects of solving large eigenvalue problem and, offered me the material means to contribute.

Second, by offering me “involuntarily” the opportunity to meet my husband who was on master internship when Françoise and me had our first meeting at CDC.

She was deeply feminist, and insidious misogynistic behavior touched her enormously. She reinforced in me this feeling of the necessity of the fight always and always for the rights of the women. When I had just finished my PhD, she kept telling me: “Nahid, you have three major handicaps to overcome: being a woman, Iranian and mathematician…”.

Françoise had a great positive influence to my life. I am indebted to her on many aspects of my professional but also personal life. Despite our differences in character, we have been close and she has a great place in my heart. Rarely does a professor has so much influence on the lives of her students. How can I forget and not be grateful to her for always?

Je viens d'apprendre le décès de Francoise Chatelin par Yousef Saad. J'ai travaillé au CERFACS de 1999 à 2003 en tant qu'étudiant en thèse sous la direction de Luc Giraud. J'ai travaillé comme assistant de cours pour Madame Chatelin pendant un an (deux semestres), je faisais les TPs. J'ai des très bons souvenirs de travailler avec Madame Chatelin. Aussi je la connaissais des nombreuses intéractions sociales au CERFACS et de discussions improvisées sur mon sujet de recherche. Je suis très triste d'apprendre son décès.

La nouvelle a glacé les personnes qui connaissaient et appréciaient Françoise dont j'ai du mal à parler au passé. L'onde de choc a été forte et les réactions de stupeur sont nombreuses coté CERFACS (aussi bien de la part de personnes qui y sont encore ou d'autres qui y ont fait un passage comme Alan Edelman aujourd'hui au MIT). Tous saluent l'engagement de Françoise pour les sciences mathématiques avec une dimension philosophique qui adisparu aujourd'hui dans la course au h-index.
Je partage mon temps en l'Inria à Bordeaux et le CERFACS (et surtout ma famille) à Toulouse et avais régulièrement l'occasion de discuter (avec grand plaisir) avec elle, les dernières opportunités remontent aux semaines qui ont précédé le confinement.
Le couloir du CERFACS, que nous partagions, sera bien vide; une page importante s'est tournée.

C'est avec une grande tristesse que j'apprends le deces de Madame Chatelin Francoise.  Merci de faire suivre a ses enfants et proches, et de transmettre mes condoleances pour cette perte immense.
Mme Chatelin etait ma directrice de these au centre de recherché scientifique IBM en 1985-1989.
Une tres grande dame. Elle aura ouvert les portes a beaucoup d'entre nous. Je ne serais pas ou je suis, sans elle. Ma carriere, ma force et confiance.
Une tres grande determination a apporter son support aux femmes aussi (I am who I am because of her). Une tres grande aventure pour moi, d'etre sous sa supervision (Life changing). Sa force etait imperturbable. Sa passion communiquante.

Je viens d'apprendre avec grande tristesse le décès Françoise  Chatelin.  Françoise était ma directrice de thèse (3eme cycle et ensuite en doctorat d'état) entre 1972 et 1983. J'ai eu l'honneur en fait d'avoir été son tout premier étudiant en Doctorat. Il y avait à Grenoble une équipe très  forte et active dans la spécialité de l'algèbre numérique linéaire et Françoise a émergé avec force de ce groupe sur la scène internationale.  Je lui dois de m'avoir orienté sur un chemin qui m'a amené loin. Merci Françoise.
Une qualité qu'avait Françoise, était son enthousiasme a supporter les étudiants qui étaient défavorisés, souvent originaires des pays du tiers monde, et aussi les  étudiantes – car il n y en avait pas beaucoup de femmes en mathématiques appliquées a l'époque.
La disparition de Françoise m'attriste car elle marque pour moi la fin d'une époque. On a débuté deux carrières ensemble, elle sa carrière académique de professeur avec son tout premier doctorant, et moi le tout début  de ma carrière académique avec les tous premiers sujets de recherche suggérés par elle.
Mes sincères  condoléances  a tous les membres de sa famille.

C'est avec beaucoup d'émotion que j'apprends la décès de Françoise, personnalité éminente du monde scientifique que j'ai connu. Je ne l'ai eue comme proche collègue que pendant deux ans et demi de 1965 à 1967 à l'IMAG. J'ai profondément admiré les résultats d'approximation numérique des problèmes spectraux associés aux problèmes elliptiques qu'elle obtint alors, qui ont conduit à la publication d'un livre plusieurs fois traduit.
Poursuivant ma carrière à Besançon où l'information scientifique était moins riche qu'à Grenoble, et beaucoup moins accessible que dans le monde numérique actuel, mes plus proches collègues restés à Grenoble, François (Robert) et elle donc, ont été des contacts essentiels pour me permettre une forme de désenclavement du Laboratoire dont j'avais eu à prendre la responsabilité. Ils ont en particulier tous deux été pour moi  des truchements efficaces pour accéder aux travaux de pionnier de W.L. Miranker (Centre de Recherche IBM de Yorktown Heights) dans des domaines variés : Calcul parallèle pour François, méthodes d'agrégation (accélération multi-niveaux) pour Françoise, problèmes de représentation machine des nombres aussi. Finalement, trajectoires scientifiques parallèles en quelque sorte, indubitablement enrichie pour celle qui me concerne. Que ce triste moment me permette d'exprimer ici toute ma reconnaissance et aussi mes condoléances à sa famille.

I learned yesterday from Nahid Ehmad about the passing of Francoise Chatelin. I am truly sorry – my sincere condolences.
She was a remarkable scientist, a passionate person, and a fighter. Even though I had met her only a couple of times (UIUC, St Malo) I had immense indirect benefit from her, since you were her first student. It would also be unfair to forget Marie-Christine Brunet.
A personal anecdote: I am ashamed to say that when I first saw her book “Spectral Approximation ….” – I think I was still a graduate student and had not heard of her – at the Engineering Library, I thought the author was called Francois Chatelin – I guess I was blind sighted – somehow my brain could not associate a woman's name with heavy math published in the prestigious hardback “black” series of Academic Press…. what can I say…) Anyway, in that book it was also a great surprise to see that she used an epigraph in her “Spectral Approximation of Linear Operators” by the the Greek poet Y. Ritsos (who had received the Lenin Prize) saying something about her sensibilities.

Bonjour Prof. Nahid Emad,

 Je vous sais gré de tenter de m’approcher au sujet de l’hommage que ses amis et collègues ont prévu de rendre à Françoise Châtelin le 14 octobre. Elle était pour moi une amie de longue date, que j’adorais rencontrer quand l’occasion s’y prêtait, je ne sais plus depuis quand,sans doute dans les congrès annuels d’analyse numérique que chaque centre de mathématique appliquée organisait à son tour… Ce fut une grande fierté pour moi lorsqu’elle me choisit pour faire partie de son jury de thèse (d’habilitation). Je laisse le soin à d’autres plus qualifiés que moi de parler de ses mérites scientifiques-qui sont grands.Par contre, je témoigne que Françoise fut un être libre, dites-le haut et fort, elle fut une femme libre et indépendante. Ses collègues masculins,souvent machos,le lui ont fait payer cher. Je ne serai pas présent le 14 octobre.

It was around January 2003 that I submitted, gradually, some applications to get an admission for continuing my study in PhD. As usual, the applications were sent directly to some active and well-known professors. One of them was Prof. F. Chatelin. Like some others, she asked me some more information and then she followed the official way for preparing the admission from Université Toulouse 1. Then she informed me that I will be allowed to stay and work on my PhD affair in CERFACS. Receiving the admission was certainly a very good news for everybody like me. Staying and working at CERFACS as fulltime visitor was certainly my next chance.
During the first year of my work, I had 3 months French classes. After that I was the chance to get to know more my Professor. The subject of my thesis under the supervision of Prof. F. Chatelin have been agreed to be Homotopic Deviation theory. The main aims were to complete and to improve the bases of the theory and to find possible applications for it.
After my PhD, I have been supported by Prof. Chatelin and Prof. Iain Duff to get a 3 months (that actually took 6 months work for me) Studying Engineer Contract with CERFACS where the main aim was controlling the error propagations in some parallel Fortran codes.
During 5 years, 2003-2008, in Toulouse and working on research topics related to my dissertation and other case studies, Prof. Chatelin has always been a very good and compassionate supervisor with seriousness and accuracy. In addition to her direct responsibility about my thesis, I had the opportunity to learn a great deal of scientific, social, and historical material from her and other excellent professors at CERFACS or from many other universities and research centers.
In 2015, I started to work on the generalization of the idea of homotopic deviation from matrices to matrix pencils and then to matrix polynomials. All of these results are dedicated to Françoise.
